Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in its second movie. This sequel picks up where the first one left off were Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) in the mushroom planet. Dr. Robotnik manages to escape the planet with the help Knuckles (Idris Elba). Knuckles is on a mission to find Sonic (Ben Schwartz) to see if he knows where to find the Master Emerald. Back on earth Sonic is trying to find his way to be a superhero. It doesn’t go well, and Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) speak to Sonic about being responsible when using his powers.
Tom and Maddie leave to go to Hawaii for Maddie’s sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell) and Randall’s (Shamar Moore) wedding. While Tom and Maddie are away, Sonic is alone with the family dog when Dr. Robotnik pays Sonic a visit. This is where Sonic and Knuckles meet, and they have their first interaction. This is where Sonic learns about the Master Emerald. During the fight, Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) comes to help Sonic get away from Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik. Tails later tells Sonic that he’s been watching him since he sent an powerful electrical surge from Earth, which occurred in the first film. Dr. Robotnik enlists the help of his former assistant Stone (Lee Majdoub) whose coffee shop turns out to be a front for Dr. Robotnik’s lab. Since Tom, who is the Green Hill town Sherriff is away, Deputy Whipple (Adam Pally) is on to Stone and finds out the hard way about Dr. Robotnik.

This sets up the movie where we learn about family, trauma, and power. Yes, all of this in a video game movie. Sonic learns that the Wachowski’s are really his family and how they all take in Tails who finally feels like he fits in. Both Knuckles and Sonic share a trauma from the war between the Echidna and the Longclaws and how we react to sudden loss. We learn about power from Dr. Robotnik and how when it’s abused, chaos ensues.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has something for everyone. If you’re a Sonic video game fan, there are a lot of easter eggs, especially in the end credit scene. I must admit, I am familiar with the Sonic game and even played it, but not with all the characters. Tails was a cute addition to the movie and Knuckles growth during his time dealing with Dr. Robotnik and Sonic shows that you can release the pain and revenge you think you need, and that power is not good when in the wrong hands.
I enjoyed the sequel as much as the first movie. The end credits show that there may be a third and if it’s as strong as the first two then I’m there for the third.
