Fast X – Dom and the Family are back!

Source: Universal Pictures

Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) is back in another fast paced, action-adventure movie. This time Dom and the gang seem to be relaxed and loving life and family. They even had the family dinner at the beginning of the movie, which includes the Toretto grandmother, Abuelita Toretto (Rita Moreno). Usually, the Toretto dinners are at the end of the movie, this time it’s at the beginning, so that should tell us to buckle up and get ready for an exhilarating ride.

Things start to go from calm to what the heck is happening, when we see Cipher (Charlize Theron) shows up unexpectedly at Dom’s and Letty’s (Michelle Rodriguez) door. She comes with a warning that danger is coming. Cipher, who was the bad guy from Fast 9, lets them know that Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of their old nemesis Hernan Reyes (Joaquim Almeida) who blames the crew for his father’s death back in Fast Five in 2011 and he is out for revenge.

Dante manages to separate Dom’s crew and causes havoc in Rome. Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej Parker (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) and Ramsey (Natalie Emmanuel) are sent to Rome thinking that it’s an undercover job, not knowing it’s a trap by Dante. Dom and the crew rush to Rome to help their friends. This sets off a series of events that brings Han (Sung Kang), Deckard Shaw (Jason Stratham) back to save the others from Dante’s wrath.

Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes is a showstopper. Every time he appears on the screen, you’re enraptured by him and waiting for the mischief that he comes up with next.

Momoa played Reyes’ over top and slightly flamboyant, I wasn’t upset by his portrayal. I thought Momoa’s over the top acting of Dante actually shows that not only is he out for revenge but he does it with ego and with a slight admiration for Dom and the crew which drives him to hurt them even more At times, Momoa’s Dante is so captivating that you can help but to see what he will do next and how the family will get through it and if they will all make it.

The stunts and the action in this movie were crazy and over the top. At times, I found myself laughing because some of the stunts were so unbelievable and on the verge of cartoonish. The stunts in this movie were so outrageous that it puts the stunts by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible to shame. Dom’s car should be in the car hall of fame for all the stunts that this car survived. My car would’ve been totaled after the first stunt. This is the appeal of these movies, the more outrageous, the better. Hats off to the stunt coordinator and crew.

All in all, Fast X is a fun time that continues the theme of family. Dom and the crew showed us that no matter what, that family comes first. Dante is a strong foil and protagonist for Dom and the crew. As you will find this is part one of two, so Dante is not finished with Dom and the family. Hopefully, you got a chance to see this movie on the big screen, if not, this is a Saturday afternoon or night movie night. This is an okay to watch movie if fantasy-action movie is your thing.
