Only Murders in the Building- Does It Again!

Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building has ended and what a great season it was. I really enjoyed the first season and this season, the chemistry between Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short is even stronger. We find Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) celebrating the retirement of their HOA President Bunny Folder (Jayne Houdyshell) who introduces a very pregnant Ursula (Vanessa Aspillaga) as the next building President. Bunny leaves early as she is a little sad to be giving up her duties. The rest of the residents stay a little longer to talk about Bunny. After a time, Mabel comes home to find a bloody Bunny collapsing in her arms and the killer escaping through hidden passages that are found throughout the building. Oliver and Charles come to Mabel’s apartment and find her covered in Bunny’s blood. So hence, we have another murder in the building. I would think at some point, some of the residents would be ready to move.

Mabel of course is considered the prime suspect, as she was in season 1, but Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) knows that Mabel is probably not involved; and since the murder weapon disappeared, they could not keep her in custody. Detective Williams has her partner Detective Kreps (Michael Rapaport) around since she is getting ready to go on maternity leave and he seems a little too interested in the case. Detective Williams tells the trio to not investigate but she knows better and tells them to call her first if they find anything. While this is going on, Oliver is having his own family crisis by learning about a family secret involving his son Will (Ryan Broussard). Charles is coming to terms with who his father was. This was sparked by Charles finding a painting by Rose Cooper (Shirley MacLaine) that had his father in it in Bunny’s apartment. All these storylines from the main three characters were strong and yet didn’t impede upon the main storyline which was Bunny’s murder.

I commend the writing of this show. I like how they give Mabel, Oliver and Charles individual lives and yet come together for the case. They are also there to support one another and help each other through difficult times outside the case. We also learn more about some of the residents which makes you feel like you are a part of the building. We do learn the reason why Oliver and Teddy Dumas (Nathan Lane) don’t like one another. Mabel finds a way to open her heart to an artist (Cara Delevingne) who works at an Art Studio. Cindy Canning (Tina Fey), who is a highly successful podcaster is back for season 2 along with her tortured assistant, Poppy White (Adina Version), who we learn more about.

Only Murders in the Building is a fun, whodunit show that keeps you involved not only seeing Mabel, Charles and Oliver solve the building murders, but we also get a peek into their personal lives, and we care. The ending, dare I say a semi post credit scene sets up for Season 3 and, yes, Paul Rudd is involved and I’m here for it. If you haven’t watched this show, I implore you to stream Season 1 and then season 2 on Hulu.
