The “Core 4” who are the leftovers from the last Scream movie, Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) her sister Sam (Melissa Barrera), Chad Meeks-Mart (Mason Gooding) and his sister Mindy Meeks (Jasmin Savoy Braun) have relocated from Woodsboro to New York City. Sam is there to watch over her sister Tara. Tara is in college to try and live her life and not live in fear from the events of Westboro. She wants to be a regular person, living an ordinary life but we soon find out that will not happen. Tara’s sister Sam is there to watch over her and Tara feels that Sam is being overprotective. We soon learn that Sam has good reason to be this way.
Tara lives with Mindy and Quinn (Liana Liberato) who is the daughter of Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney) who already has started investigating two murders. Chad also has a new room mate named Ethan Landry (Jack Champion). As with all the Scream movies, we start with a murder. This begins a series of events that ends up tying Sam into this. Of course, Sam and Tara are the focus of Ghostface. We soon see that Ghostface starts attacking people close to the sisters. The first killing brings back an old friend that started with the first Scream movie, Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox). The Core 4 want to move on from this, but Sam and Tara soon get a call from Ghostface that comes from the number of Sam’s ex -boyfriend Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid).
Scream VI has all the thrills and kills you can ask for in a sequel, excuse me, the franchise, as Mindy calls it. Some of the killing scenes are so hard and gruesome, so when some characters pop back up and you’re like “How? “Mindy and Chad, who are the niece and nephew of Randy from Scream 2, once again take from their uncle and breakdown what’s the difference between sequel and a franchise and who can possibly be involved.
Scream VI is about relationships and loss. The relationship between Tara and Sam and how Tara wants to try living life instead of being stuck with everything tied to Westboro. Sam has her own issues reconciling who she is being the daughter of the first Scream murderer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Sam also wonders with the events in Westboro and New York if she is destined to be like him. The Core 4 see the importance of sticking together and realize how precious life is. We also learn from the reveal of the killers that grief can turn into obsession and nothing good ever comes from that.
Scream VI was good follow up to the prior movie. It also made many references and easter eggs to those Scream movies that came before it. All in all, it was a sold Scream movie, if you enjoy the Scream movies, then you will enjoy this one. Not sure what’s next for the franchise but I’m sure it’s not the last we see of Sam and Tara. This movie is full of jump scares, horror, and a little gore and if that is your thing then Scream VI is the movie for you, other than that this is a good Saturday evening at home type of scary movie.
