Soap Operas! Are you still watching?

Source: Google Images/TV Series Finale

I, like so many others grew up on soap operas. I remember being home with my mom and looking at Young and the Restless, Ryan’s Hope, and Edge of Night. As I got older, I continued watching Y&R but also All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital. It’s refreshing to know that they were always there with me as I was growing up.

Over the years, a few of our favorite soaps have gone by the wayside like Passions and Generations who were relative newbies to the soap opera world but didn’t have long lives. They were unique but I think people weren’t ready for the content they were giving. Then later, some of our favorites started going away, like As the World Turns, All My Children, and One life to Live. We only have four soap operas left, Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital and Days of our Lives.

It’s a testament to the main characters and family arcs of these shows that continues to connect the demographics that they are aimed for which are women 18-54. I hope there are still college students looking at these shows during study breaks to clear their minds as I did or taking a break from work life to see what’s going on with Newman’s or the Forrester’s. These shows and their families come to be like our own and we are invested in these stories. We want to know the latest happenings with the Hortons and Brady’s of Days of Our Lives, the Quartermain’s and Spencer’s of General Hospital, the Forrester’s of The Bold & Beautiful and the Newman’s, Abbott’s, Chancellors’, and Winters’ families of Young and the Restless.

I must admit my constant viewership has gone down but the way these stories are written, they make it easy to jump back in and catch right on up. We may not recognize all the faces, but we would eventually figure it out. During this past year, the ratings have increased according to TVLine.com because we were all at home and our soap opera families made us feel safe during these unprecedented times.
