Ted Lasso: I’m Late to the Party

Source: Apple

I binged watched Season 1 of Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis, it is well deserving of all the accolades that this show is receiving. The cast is strong, and they all have great chemistry that makes the show believable. Ted Lasso is the coach of an English soccer team. He had success with a college football team and was hired by Rebecca to coach the AFC Richmond team. Ted’s optimistic attitude hides some serious things that are going on in Ted’s personal life. The recently divorced club owner Rebecca Welton played by Hannah Waddingham, comes off as likable but we soon learn what she’s all about. Rebecca’s right hand is Leslie Higgins played by Jeremy Swift who at first goes along with Rebecca’s shenanigans but once he interacts with Ted things begin to change. Ted’s best friend is Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, Ted relies on his friend greatly as they both try to navigate a new country and a new sport that they have no idea how to coach. This brings us to Nathan “Nate” Shelley played by Nick Mohammed, he’s the team’s shy kit man whom Ted and Coach Beard eventually rely on because of his knowledge of the game and the team.

In the first season of Ted Lasso, we see conflict between the captain of the team, Roy Kent played by Brett Goldstein, who is the elder of the team, and is not happy with the realization that he’s getting older, and Jamie Tartt played by Phil Dunster, who is an up-and-coming striker with the attitude that he’s better than everyone and divides the team. Jamie’s girlfriend, Keely Jones played by Juno Temple, is a model and too smart for Jamie and his young shenanigans. We also see a flirtation, albeit awkward between Keely and Roy.

Ted Lasso’s compassion and optimism, even when he sees that people are against him, makes you want to root for his success with the team. The season takes you on an emotional and hilarious journey. Some of the conflicts and triumphs makes this show a must watch. Ted comes up with sayings and references so unexpected that you can’t help but laugh. One of Ted’s quotes that make me laugh is when Rebecca asks him how he takes his tea, and Ted says” Well, usually I take it right back to the counter, because someone’s made a horrible mistake.” Another reference to tea is “Tea and I are on a lifelong hiatus.” If you haven’t seen this show, do yourself a favor and watch it. You won’t regret it. I’m looking forward to season two which starts on July 23rd on Apple TV+.
