Tom Cruise is back and better than ever in the new Top Gun Maverick! Tom Cruise plays Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the title character. We find that Maverick has stayed a Captain for the last 30 years due to several reasons. Maverick has done many things that should have gotten him kicked out of the navy but his old friend, Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky has kept out of harm's way. A huge dangerous mission arises that needs to flown by the Top Guns, who are pilots that are top of their class. To the chagrin Rear Admiral, “Hammer” Cain (Ed Harris), ordered by Iceman to recruit Maverick to teach these Top guns how to fly on this mission. Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson (Jon Hamm), who is not a fan of Maverick, tells him he must go back to the very place he has been hiding from for the past 30 years. Maverick’s only ally, other than Iceman is Rear Admiral Solomon “Warlock” Bates (Charles Parnell).

Maverick goes back to the town he has stayed away from and reconnected with his old flame, Penelope “Penny” Benjamin who owns the local bar, who is surprised to see Maverick back into town. There, Maverick sees the ghost of his past, the son of Maverick’s best friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller). Maverick gets to check out all the Top Guns in the bar which he’s kicked out of before they learn he is their teacher. The students, who are the elite flyers. They all want to be the lead on this mission and the main competition is between Rooster and Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin (Glen Powell).
The flight scenes are spectacular. the cinematography and sound put you right into the action with the pilots. The twists, turns and dives bring you to the edge of your seat. It is reminiscent of the first movie but better. Fans of the original will see that this one wraps the Maverick storyline and starts a new one. The emotion balance between trying to figure out his life and future as well as resolving issues with Rooster about his father. There is also an emotional connection that eventually comes with the team as they head into a dangerous mission.
Top Gun Maverick is a great sequel. Tom Cruise still looks amazing, and his acting is still top tier. All the acting in this movie was solid and the story was believable. This, along with intense actions scenes make this a great sequel that was worth the 30 year wait.
