This weekend was a good time for me to catch up on some shows. The two that I watched this weekend were,That Damn that Michael Che and Black Lady Sketch Show. If you haven’t watched these shows, you are missing out.
That Damn Michael Che, which is on HBO Max, has a theme to each show and is in its first season. Some of the themes they that they deal with varies from relationships, police brutality, unemployment, or how woke white people feel when they are alone with black people and so on. The sketches which are guaranteed to have a special guest stars like Omari Hardwick, Geoffrey Owens from The Cosby Show, Billy Porter from Pose, Method Man from Power and Wu Tang Clan, and Chris Distefano which shows them in a hilarious light that you may not always see from them. The show, while poignant at times, does come at you hard and fast, but it shows in a funny way how we as Black Americans adjust to certain situations when it deals with race and how everyone can relate to relationship woes. That Damn Michael Che also incorporates some of Che’s coworkers from the OG of skit comedy, Saturday Night Live, such as Cecily Strong, Colin Jost, SNL Alum Ellen Cleghorne, Heidi Gardner, and Colin Quinn round up the regular cast. Michael’s funny, sometimes dry takes on the theme of that episode and his confessionals that transition the sketches are hilarious as well.

A Black Lady Sketch Show is in its second season. An all-black female led sketch comedy show is lighter in approach with their themes, whereas Michael’s is a little darker. This show touches on themes such as social inadequacies, anxiety, religion, sex and relationships issues as well. The Robin Thede led show features in the main cast for the 2nd season which are Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis, Laci Mosley, and Skye Townsend are hilarious. The show carries on the storyline line of the world ending from Season 1 and the dream scene explains away the past cast members and brilliantly introduces the new. A Black Lady Sketch Show also has a loads of guest stars, like producer of the show, Issa Rae, Yvette Nicole Brown, Omarion, Kim Coles, Laz Alonso, Lance Gross, Ayesha Curry, Amber Riley, and Gabrielle Union just to name a few. One of the best parts of the show is the opening title sequence that changes every episode.

These two shows, That Damn Michael Che Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show are streaming now, and both are on HBO Max. They are both hilarious but extremely different in their approach. One from a male perspective the other from a female perspective. Check them both out and depending on how you like your funny, you may choose to watch one or both. I personally like them both.
